Sir, – In his article on the legacy of Ian Paisley, Daniel Geary conflates two widely differing groups who left the British Isles for America ("Paisley's exclusivist nationalism lives on in Trump and Brexit", Opinion & Analysis, September 27th). The Presbyterians who left these shores in large numbers were not seeking to assert "the right of Anglo-Saxon Protestants" to govern the lands they settled in America. On the contrary , the Ulster-Scots, Scotch-Irish (call them what you will) were not of Anglo-Saxon stock and, moreover, emigrated to America to avoid religious persecution from the Anglo-Saxon stock who comprised the established Churches of England and Ireland at the time. – Yours, etc,
KEVIN O’SULLIVAN,
