Sir, - Yesterday's letter from John Taylor did not deserve pride of place on your Letters page. This gave it a profile it did not warrant. He is correct, however, when he states that unionists have had virtually no power for the past 30 years. They will not have any for the next 30 years either unless they reaffirm the Good Friday Agreement. The behaviour of some in the UUP at the moment is akin to turkeys voting for Christmas.
Mr Taylor's assertion that "all civil rights demands were acceded to before 1970" is wholly untrue, as miles of books and thousands of personal experiences will bear witness.
In my own case, I came here to work in 1982, had a permanent job and was a house owner, and yet was denied voting rights in local elections. The Anglo-Irish Agreement (1985) gave me this right. By contrast, as an overseas student in student accommodation in London, I had voting rights in local elections when I lived there 10 years earlier.
John Taylor refuses to work towards the implementation of the Good Friday Agreement which was overwhelmingly endorsed by the electorate here last year. He is in excellent company with those who refuse to accept the democratic mandate of the people in East Timor and Mynamar! - Yours, etc.,
Marga Foley, Belfast 9.
