Sir, - I was delighted to read (April 25th) of the introduction of the theory test for learner drivers. However, this was tempered by the remarks by the two experts on the cost of this test.
As a retired driving instructor with more than 30 years' experience, I constantly reminded my students that a qualified course of driving tuition was not an expense but an investment and was but a fraction of the cost of their first car.
So what is the Minister doing about the most important impute of road safety - the registration of driving schools, the training and testing of driving instructors up to European standards? For having read the sample questions on page three the successful students will probably be more knowledgable than most of the "driving instructors" they are forced to use because of the lack of Government control of driving schools. - Yours, etc.,
Simon Cullen, Birchview Heights, Kilnamanagh, Dublin 24.
