Madam, - The babbling dumbing-down of what used to be the pre-lunch Sunday Show on RTÉ Radio 1 has been deservedly criticised by your reviewer, Bernice Harrison.

I, for one, have abandoned the programme, though I note that Tom McGurk's talents are in the meantime effectively deployed elsewhere on weekdays.

I wish, however, that your radio reviewer's column had included some notice of a very fine achievement by Radio 1 on Sunday July 11th.

I refer to the superb Kate Minogue production of Chekhov's The Three Sisters, in Brian Friel's translation and with a first-class cast including Gerald McSorley and the three real-life sisters, Cathryn, Jane and Barbara Brennan.

Well done to the Sunday Playhouse feature in general, and to all involved with this production in particular.

It was in our best tradition of public service arts broadcasting. Such excellence deserves to be acknowledged. - Yours etc.,
