Sir, – I echo the sentiments expressed by Breandán Ó Mathúna on wind turbines (May 9th).
If we can have planning permission for something as fundamental as a children’s hospital turned down on the basis of its effect on the skyline, how can we contemplate the indiscriminate erection of these ugly structures? Their presence will not only detract from the quality of our lives and those of future generations but will also strike at the heart of one of the pillars of the tourism industry. – Yours, etc,
A chara, – Unlike Breandán Ó Mathúna, I admire the simplicity and elegance of the wind turbines.
Nothing in our landscape is natural. We have modified, moulded, imported, transplanted, built and demolished for thousands of years. New is not always ugly, just as old is not always beautiful.
The turbines are built on the west coast as our prevailing winds are from the west and southwest.
Change is inevitable. Alternative energy is not “desirable”, it is vital. – Is mise,
