Madam, - In your issue of July 22nd, Noel Whelan advocates the setting up of a tribunal of inquiry into the bombing of Campile by the Germans in 1940 and suggests that other tribunals might be established to solve other mysteries. On Castle Avenue, near here, there is a plaque in commemoration of Brian Boru, who was killed in the locality in 1014. I have heard it said that those minding him were asleep and failed to protect him.
Perhaps Mr Whelan would support my suggestion that a tribunal be established to ascertain the truth about Brian's death. No doubt it would help alleviate the pain of those who pass the site ever day and wonder about injustice done.
I am sure there are a few retired judges who would jump at an opportunity to make a few bob chairing such an inquiry and legal eagles willing to assist him/her would flock in droves to chambers. Of course, if payments were made at rates prevailing in 1014 there might be a lack of enthusiasm for the project. - Yours, etc,
PATRICK GERRARD, Mount Prospect Avenue, Dublin 3.
