Madam, - The National Gallery of Ireland must surely be congratulated for its presentation of a George Bernard Shaw commemorative day, an event that drew a packed audience to listen to Alan Stanford speaking for one breathless hour on the humour, wit and vagaries of a master writer whom he obviously worships.

Alan Stanford's eloquence inspired many in that audience to visit the bookshop in search of Bernard Shaw's works. How disappointing to find so little about a writer whose output as a critic, political commentator and polemicist, as The Irish Times of July 26th pointed out, was so prodigious. Apart from the brilliance of his plays, GBS was one of our greatest writers. It is time to resurrect him. He has much to teach us all, like Shakespeare, his words are as relevant today as when they were first written.

We need a festival of Shaw plays in Dublin so that the prophet may become known in his own country. - Yours, etc,

CATHLEEN BENSON, Roseacre, Naas, Co Kildare.
