Time for bus lane disclosures

Madam, – Can anyone explain how bus lane time prohibitions are arrived at? Who decides and on what basis are the decisions made? There is a relatively new bus lane on the Castleknock Road between the Phoenix Park Gate and Castleknock Village – approximately 2km. The first stretch has a prohibition of 24 hours Mon-Sat, the second has one of 24 hours Mon-Sun and the third has one between 1600 and 1900 hours Mon-Sat. Surely bus lanes are there to provide a quick route to and from work between 0700 and 1000 hours Mon-Fri and a return from work between 1600 and 1900 hours, Mon-Fri? Why have extended hours at times when buses don’t run?

A few years ago a new bus lane was established in Dunshaughlin, Co Meath to ensure a quick route home from work (1600-1900 hours). However, this has now been changed to a 24-hour prohibition. This is a route I travel on a regular basis and the sighting of a bus in a bus lane is very rare.

In the current climate of openness and transparency, is there an explanation for these irrational decisions? Common sense has to prevail to accommodate all road- users. – Yours, etc,
