Time for fare-free public transport

Sir, – How about fare-free public transport? Luxembourg does it. Instead of the convoluted calculations by the National Transport Authority would need to perform (“Fare cuts considered in bid to encourage return to public transport”, News, January 28th), a simple, nation-wide scheme would bring many benefits.

The obvious one would be to cut CO2 for the transport sector. And this could be boosted with an on-street parking ban except for residents in inner cities. Paris and Oslo are getting there, making cities cleaner and nicer. And a boost in night-time services would make them safer.

As a beneficiary of free transport for the over-65s, I can attest that this would be a popular move, and keep the Green Party happy. – Yours, etc,
