Time to give good priests a break

Madam, – As a very old Irish Catholic, I am writing to congratulate and support young Irish Catholic Veronica Frawly (April 6th). Her assertion that the media takes a biased view of the Catholic Church is my perception also.

In almost 88 years I have known hundreds of good priests. I have also known one who offended and was jailed. Please acknowledge the good work of the parish clergy and the shame they have to endure because of the very few who besmirched their vocation. Let’s laud too the wonderful work of the order priests and religious who educated us and looked after our health in hospitals where the vomiting bugs and MRSA were unheard of. Please be balanced in your reporting and opinion columns. – Yours, etc,

Madam, – Further to Veronica Frawly’s comments (April 6th), I would like to ask those priests two questions. Why haven’t any of them spoken out or stood up to their bishops and the Pope for their number one priority of protecting the abusers within their ranks? Is it not time for their silence to be broken? Qui tacet consentit (who keeps silent consents). – Yours, etc,
