Madam, – Rachel Stanley (April 16th) suggests that it is acceptable for priests to not speak out regarding the sexual abuse of children by their colleagues because “priests are always silenced and punished in some way for their bravery” when they have challenged their superiors.

It is not an act of bravery for Irish priests to speak out against the sexual abuse of children. It is, however, an act of supreme cowardice on the part of the approximately 4,500 Roman Catholic priests in Ireland that at least 99 per cent of them have said absolutely nothing. – Yours etc,
