Madam, - Godfrey Shaw (July 29th) rightly draws attention to the problem, both legal and practical, of the increasing prevalence of tinted windows in motor vehicles.
A few days ago, my car was very nearly side-swiped at a busy roundabout by a tank-sized SUV with almost blacked-out "tinted" windows. If a hit-and-run collision had occurred, I would have been unable to give any description of the driver.
Just because, for example, thousands of people ignore the drink-driving laws doesn't mean that it's "cool" to do so or that cases brought against them should be dismissed. It is long past time that the Garda and the judiciary should be of one mind in prosecuting and convicting those who daily threaten our lives by various kinds of reckless driving. - Yours, etc,
JERRY CROWLEY, Belgrove Lawn, Chapelizod, Dublin 20.
