Madam, - It is hard to imagine a more vulgar display of opulence than that described in Jonathan Glancey's report in your edition of January 17th on John Travolta's new pad in Florida.
There must be something radically wrong when this kind of obscenity can exist in a world where, according to the Hunger website, some 24,000 people die every day from hunger and 200,000 children die every week from preventable diseases. - Yours, etc.,

Madam, - "Green light for new home". An item tucked away in your Property section of January 15th included those words in the title.
Then followed the information that a well known person named had won a planning battle to demolish a certain house which had been bought at auction for €2.75 million and was now free to build a bigger house in its place.
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Council had refused permission for such a development but An Bord Pleanála had allowed it.
Surely such an occurrence must count as an outrageous scandal even in our grossly unequal society. Nothing is apparently impossible for the wealthy in our midst.
Must we now await a socialist utopia before we can ensure that such developments cannot happen? - Yours, etc.,
JOE DEASY, St Teresa's Road, Crumlin, Dublin 12.
