A chara, – Dermot Hanafin (June 15th) was on the money when he lambasted the cosseting of children in modern-day Ireland.
This month I attended a wedding in Ireland where the hotel drinks reception was “embellished” by the late arrival of one person by helicopter.
A tardy master of ceremonies? The father of the bride who had neglected his duties at the altar? The night’s entertainment intent on showcasing their celebrity credentials? Not a bit of it.
The sole passenger was, in fact, an immaculately-heeled damsel connected to a well-known Irish family in the helicopter business and who is not yet in her 17th year, I am led to believe.
And the reason for her tardiness? She had spent the earlier part of her day sitting a Junior Certificate examination, I was told.
As fetching as the late arrival was, however, not even a whirlybird could steal the resplendent newlyweds’ thunder. – Is mise,
