Sir, - On September 11th, the world was aghast when close to 7,000 innocent people were killed in Manhattan and Washington DC. This represents 29 deaths per million of the population in the United States. A war against global terrorism was declared and in Ireland a day of mourning was called.

Meanwhile, 300 deaths have occurred on the roads in Ireland this year. This represents a staggering statistic of 79 deaths per million of the population in Ireland. No war has been declared, and no day of mourning! Apparently the loss of life on the roads in Ireland is in some way socially acceptable.

Surely the time has come for society to take responsibility and adopt an attitude of zero tolerance towards anti-social behaviour on the roads. - Yours, etc., Dr Jim Egan, Marlborough Road, Dublin 4.
