Sir, - Although they failed to demonise Tony Blair with the expensive New Labour, New Danger" campaign, the floundering British Conservative Party must have some misgivings about the attempt of the new Grand Master of the Orange Order, Robert Saulters, to do the same. Mr Saulters seems to be under the impression that Tony Blair's marriage to a Romanist will so appal the British electorate that the chance of Labour winning a general election will be damaged; that religion looms so large in the mind of the voters that Blair's faux-pas will ensure a comfortable win for the Tories and their unionist cronies. Forgive my sniggers.
It must be hard enough for a minority Conservative Government to have to depend on the unpredictable unionist vote without members of the quaint, if somewhat weird, Orange cult muddying the waters. With friends like that, who needs enemies? - Yours, etc.
