Sir, – As Fred O’Connor (September 14th) points out, aural announcements on train journeys can be quite helpful.
However, he might not feel quite as enthusiastic about them if he travelled by Dart on a daily basis.
Perhaps it really is necessary to subject passengers to announcements of the blatantly obvious such as, “This is a northbound Dart serving all stations to Howth. Once again, this is a northbound Dart serving all stations to Howth”, but there is no reason to do so at ear-splitting volume.
Most people probably have a fair idea which train they are already on. It could be that the drivers get a kick out of reminding passengers of their whereabouts with the volume cranked up to 11 accompanied by a level of feedback that would do Jimi Hendrix proud. – Yours, etc,
