Top of the toponyms to you

A chara, – I agree with Simon Ó Faoláin (June 25th) about the awful spelling of our placenames. In the minority of cases where there are actual English names they could be kept alongside the Irish one, but Kill, Bally, Lough and all that is stage or bogus Irish. If Dún Laoghaire and a few notable others can manage on Irish spelling only, surely the rest of the country can do the same.

As a first step towards spelling words, whether Irish or English, in their original, meaningful form, I hope Donald Clarke’s convincing, and as always entertaining, piece (Opinion, June 22nd) finally ends the spelling of “crack” as “craic”, but suspect those who go with the bogus spelling might just call him a crank, or should that be “crainc”? – Is mise.
