Madam, - We are constantly reminded in the media that, as a result of the Celtic Tiger, Ireland is regarded as being overpriced in many areas. However, I would like to cite one area where I feel that the value on offer is exceptional: the cost of theatre seats.
I have just purchased four top-price tickets for the Dublin Theatre Festival which cost €115 in total. In June on my annual visit to London, I attended the theatre several times. Top prices varied from £40 to £50 sterling, which is equivalent to €60 to €75.
It is acknowledged that the best of Irish theatre is on a par with anything to be found world wide, or even better. While I am not advocating price increases in this area, perhaps it is timely to acknowledge how fortunate we are to have top-quality theatre at such a reasonable cost. - Yours, etc,
JOE JORDAN,
