Sir, - Karen Maye (August 23rd) dismisses the points made by John Tierney (August 21st) on the grounds that his group has "its headquarters based in Dublin 1". In consequence, she queries, how can it "claim to have such an enlightened insight and passion for wildlife in the Irish countryside"?

The Irish Farmers' Association, the Mountain Rescue Association, the Irish Wildlife Trust, the Irish Countrywomen's Association, and Birdwatch Ireland (to name but five at random) all have their headquarters in Dublin city.

On Ms Maye's premise these established and influential groups can be dismissed as having little credibility. Somehow, I doubt if those associations' many thousands of members would concur. - Yours, etc.,
