JOE PATTON,
Sir, - Last Sunday afternoon, while walking with a companion from Leixlip to Lucan along the short stretch of road which separates these two towns, I was passed by 127 cars travelling towards Lucan. My companion, being of the canine species, was unable to count the cars travelling in the opposite direction, but I got the distinct impression that their number equalled, or even exceeded, those bound for Lucan.
I know this restlessness is a phenomenon of the Celtic Tiger, but I couldn't help being reminded of the famous dictum of the philosopher Blaise Pascal, who said that all the troubles of the world were caused by the fact that most people are unable to sit quietly alone in a room for a few hours. - Yours, etc.,
JOE PATTON,
