Sir, - Am I alone in feeling that there has been an inordinate amount of criticism of "traffic calming" in your columns.
Those opposed to this traffic management tool would do well to bear in mind that the introduction of traffic calming considerably improves the safety level and air quality of the street or roadway concerned.
Its primary function is to reduce speed and to encourage traffic to use roads which are more appropriate to the journey they are undertaking.
I live on a lane which is barely three metres wide at our gateway. The speed of vehicles passing the gateway was unbelievable and the number of vehicles at peak times was excessive.
Wicklow County Council added some traffic humps some years ago. I have absolutely no doubt that these, which had the overwhelming support of the residents on the lane, have added to the safety of us all. - Yours, etc.,
John Markham, Church Lane, Greystones, Co Wicklow.
