Madam, - The recent traffic chaos on the M50 and N11 is yet more indisputable evidence (if such were needed) of the fundamentally flawed and unsustainable transport planning and development policies pursued by various governments over many years.
Yet for all the evidence that has been so blatantly obvious for so long, flawed policies continue to be pursued as the M50 (MInfinity, if the truth be told) is now increased to three lanes at an enormous expense to facilitate yet bigger and longer traffic jams.
It now appears that it takes only the closure of one lane on one road to facilitate the repair of a water main to bring half the city to a grinding halt.
For the relevant authorities charged with responsibility for and "management" of this latest debacle, it appears to be a real case of "water on the brain". - Yours, etc,
PHILIP O'REILLY, Grosvenor Place, Rathmines, Dublin 6.
