Madam, - I was travelling on the N11 on Saturday, July 17th. Approaching the Arklow rugby club we were passed by the local fire brigade truck when within a hundred metres our north-bound lane came to a standstill.
After about ten minutes we noticed no traffic coming from the north so obviously an accident had occurred ahead of us. Gradually drivers started to turn around and head for Arklow or any turn that might facilitate onward progress.
Not a traffic cop or indeed any garda was dispatched to this increasing chaos on the southern side.
We followed like sheep off the N11 down a lane to the old coast road where we were met by all the northern traffic that had been diverted at Jack Doyle's pub. These lanes, boreens at best, are not meant for double-lane traffic. Congestion became manic, feelings frantic, chaos incarnate.
Not a single member of any service was there to facilitate in any way.
What was a joyous two-hour drive to Kilmore Quay from Foxrock that morning now became a six-hour nightmare. Wicklow gardaí, traffic and the AA certainly have a tribunal of questions to answer. - Yours, etc.,
HENRY GRATTAN BELLEW, Foxrock Mount, Dublin 18.
