Sir, - Having travelled to work this morning from Lucan to Rialto and experienced the delays that are yet again upon us, due to the return to school of so many pupils, I felt moved to write to you with an observation on the ever present problem of road congestion.
While our schools were enjoying the benefit of the Easter break, most of the rest of the workforce in the greater Dublin area enjoyed a relatively hassle-free journey to and from work because of the lack of parents transporting their children to and from school.
During this period I could travel from Lucan to Rialto in approximately 30-40 minutes. However, this morning it has returned to its old time span of roughly 70-80 minutes.
Would it not be worth considering an improved and expanded school transport system that would see an increased fleet of buses capable of transporting, say, 52 children per bus, on our roads of the greater Dublin area?
These buses, servicing each locality, would reduce the need for so many cars on our roads at peak times. This would surely prove less expensive than constructing new and bigger roads.
Another factor may be the excessive number of articulated lorries travelling through the city at peak times. Have you ever sat immobile in traffic for 30 minutes and counted the number of these monsters that clog the lanes around you? - Yours, etc.,
