Sir, - In order to speed up the flow of traffic in Dublin, I suggest the implementation of the following:
1. As many motorists do not use extra traffic lanes when these are available, I suggest that such lanes be clearly delineated by white lines - distinct, of course, from the centre line. Lanes should then be marked: Lane 1, Lane 2, and Lane 3 at frequent intervals. Lettering could be either co-linear with the line of vision or at right angles to it. In order to further induce motorists to use these lanes, traffic gardai on motor cycles could weave in and out through the traffic, with loudspeakers, exhorting motorists to use all lanes. This, I am sure would be necessary only for a short time and perhaps could be repeated if necessary.
2. Gardai could be posted at intersections (again in the initial stages of the system) to teach motorists how to make a right-hand turn. In the past three days driving through the city, I did not observe one motorist turning right in the proper manner. They do not go forward far enough before making the turn. If they did, more cars would get through on the change of lights.
I reckon that if these two suggestions were followed, the time for each journey would be reduced by about 25 per cent, which in turn should mean that there would be about 25 per cent fewer cars on the streets at any one time. - Yours, etc., Oliver Nulty,
