Sir, - There is much thought-provoking information in the article by Sean Barrett on infrastructure (Opinion, April 18th).
For myself the most thought-provoking, in dealing with the railways, was the following statement:
"In Connacht at 2 p.m. daily there are only two passenger trains running. One is at Boyle and the other at Claremorris, and there is no train at that time on the Athlone-Galway section. Since Boyle and Claremorris are over 40 miles apart, no electronic signalling is needed."
I would suggest that even more relevent to the signalling issue than the number of trains is the fact that Boyle and Claremorris are not actually on the same railway line at all, the first being on the Sligo, the second on the Westport line.
"Infrastructure must be the subject of analysis" announces the heading to the article in question. How true! Perhaps a good starting point for any future analysis by the author would be to find out where places in the West of Ireland actually are! - Yours, etc.,
