Transport Policy

Sir, - In response to Mr

Sir, - In response to Mr. Harper (May 14th), how does he propose to solve the traffic problem in Dublin, if not by encouraging the use of public transport?

Has it occurred to him that it is precisely his attitude which causes the current traffic situation. If all commuters made the effort to utilise public transport and leave their cars at home, the traffic problem would be almost (if not entirely) eradicated, and public transport would obviously be far more efficient as a result. In fact the very conversion of car lanes into bus lanes ensures increased efficiency of the buses.

Since it will require a great number of people to change their attitudes in order to bring about this happy situation, may I suggest that Mr Harper begins the chain and starts taking the bus. Certainly it may require him to leave 10 minutes, or even half an hour earlier every morning, but in the long term, if everyone followed suit, he could surely afford to leave a good deal later than he presently does. - Yours, etc.,

K. Murphy, Richmond Hill, Rathmines, Dublin 6.
