A Chara, - Sean Love (April 12th) criticises the new trespass legislation because it "criminalises Travellers' way of life". What in their way of life does it criminalise? That they camp on other people's land. Is that really a way of life that he wants to defend?
It is true that local authorities have failed disgracefully to provide adequate accommodation for travellers. Mr Love would be serving the Traveller community better by drawing our attention to which local authorities have failed in this regard and what the consequences have been for Travellers.
The implication of hiss comments is that travellers should by right be entitled to camp on tracts of land against the will of the owner. Arrogance of this kind will, in the eyes of the settled community, diminish the very strong case made by Travellers that their accommodation needs are not being properly looked after. - Is mise,
