Madam, - Your reporter Kitty Holland is correct in writing that "local authorities are not fulfilling their Traveller accommodation targets" (November 18th).
The stark reality is revealed by the 10 per cent achievement figures since 1999. "Bouldering" and court ejectment orders are indicative of their lack of any real consultation with Travellers and support groups.
All the available evidence points to only one logical conclusion: local authorities have failed utterly. They do not have the drive, empathy or will to do the work.
I suggest, on the back of 20 years' experience in this area, that the Government take the necessary steps to set up a task force, to which responsibility for Traveller accommodation and general welfare would be transferred.
I can see no other way to deal with this complex and growing social problem. - Yours, etc.,
BRENDAN VAUGHAN, Beechlawn House, Newmarket-on-Fergus,
