Madam, - I watched with a mixture of deep sadness, anger and helplessness an act of Celtic Tiger vandalism as four gracious trees, just coming into leaf and probably well over a hundred years old, were felled last Monday in the name of progress. They stood in Dudley's field, part of the Airfield estate in Dundrum before it was sold recently to a developer at whose behest, presumably, the trees were destroyed.

The next day, ironically, with due ceremony, a road cutting through Dudley's field was opened and named Overend Way. I'm sure these benevolent ladies, who left their lovely farm - an oasis of green in an increasingly built-up suburb - in trust to the people of the locality, must be turning in their graves as their generous gift is whittled away. - Yours, etc.,
