Sir, – Cities need trees and people need trees.
Drab urban landscapes are hugely improved wherever trees grow. I have watched all 44 trees planted in the middle of Dorset Street and Drumcondra Road miraculously reach maturity over about eight years now, and each time I pass I marvel at the transformation provided by such a simple natural addition.
Despite Declan Doyle's reservations (June 15th), we should be responsible enough to maintain our existing trees and establish a greater planting programme not only for shelter but to provide a habitat for our diminishing natural world.
The glories of the built environment, including the College Green and Trinity area, are relentlessly grey, which is quite a depressing colour.
We should keep the birdsong. – Yours, etc,
