All he has to do is make sure the majority make noises denouncing anything they don't like. He then "tries to convince them", but inevitably seems to be unable to change their minds.
Lo and behold, to keep him in position, instant concessions. Because, after all, he might lose, and who else will bring the UUP in ?
In this way, new road-blocks can be created, procrastinated over, and made the new "no surrender" flavour of the month, as and when the old ones look in any danger of being overcome.
