Trollope at the GPO

Sir, – Frank McNally (An Irishman's Diary, April 23rd) speculates that the republican ethos surrounding the GPO must have made the British ambassador "a little nervous" when helping to launch a new book on Trollope the other night. Had I been the British ambassador, I would have taken pride in the architectural splendour of the GPO, and other fine buildings left to Dublin by the British, and speculated why, after a century of self-rule, the Irish had produced no new buildings of any comparable quality. The tall pointy thing outside the GPO would have reinforced this view. – Yours, etc,

KEVIN O’SULLIVAN,
