Sir, – Donald Trump was the keynote speaker at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) Convention a few days ago (Suzanne Lynch, "Trump rules out starting new party in speech attacking Biden presidency", World, February 28th). That's a seat normally reserved for the Republican party's presumptive nominee for the next presidential election. After being impeached twice and leaving office in disgrace, he received a standing ovation at this august gathering. Because every senior US Republican knows that he and his followers, if spurned or displeased, will fatally split the Republican vote at the next congressional and presidential elections. Hostages and captors. A very unstable relationship. Four more very interesting years ahead in US politics. – Yours, etc,
MICHAEL DEASY,
Carrigart, Co Donegal.
