Madam, - Your correspondent Jamie Smyth, reporting from the EU summit, says that, unlike some EU countries, Ireland supports the full accession of Turkey to the Union. Is this true?
I am not aware of any debate in the Dáil, or elsewhere, where this matter was even discussed. The accession of such a large, poor and backward country, which is not even in Europe, would in my view be the final nail in the coffin for the EU, which already has big problems.
If the Government were to consult the people on this issue (which it should) I am sure that over 90 per cent would be opposed to the admission of Turkey as a full member. - Yours, etc,
P LEONARD, Dalkey, Co Dublin.
