Sir, – Taoiseach Enda Kenny’s article (“Together we have started to turn the tide to recovery” Opinion, March 4th) was a clear example of cruel and unusual punishment which should never have been inflicted by The Irish Times on its loyal readership as they started a new week!

Predictably, the article was nothing more than a helping of the same old watery, lukewarm slop that both this Government and its predecessor have been serving up since about 2009.

Mr Kenny reheated his favourite old empty cliches – “We have a clear mandate from the Irish people”, “we still have a long way to go”, “we set out our plan for recovery . . . working in partnership with the Irish people”, “sharing the sacrifices”, “We have protected the most vulnerable” – threw in a pinch of opinion and “statistics” to bulk it up, with the resultant unwholesome stodge served up as a blatant party political broadcast by a government which seems to be increasingly leaving nothing more than a bad taste in the mouths of the Irish populace.

The statement “We are working closely with the banks” however, served as a refreshing sorbet and was probably the only clear, palatable truth in the piece.
