Sir, - An Irishman living abroad, I have just spent a month visiting my family in Kerry. Although impressed by the positive improvements of recent years in the urban landscape, I was dismayed to note the degradation of the countryside by the erection of unsightly and inappropriate houses, often in areas of great beauty. The countryside is being turned into an unsightly, semi-urban straggle, and it is clear that if urgent measures are not taken, the attractiveness of the country both for locals and tourists will be irreparably harmed.
