UN convention on people with disabilities

Sir,-– Three years ago Ireland was elected to the UN Human Rights Council on the back of a number of pledges, including one to ratify “as soon as possible” the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

This convention, adopted by the UN in 2006, has been ratified by almost all UN member states. It would be very fitting if Ireland honoured its pledge and ratified the convention on December 3rd, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. – Yours, etc,

DR ARTHUR O’REILLY,
