Sir, - I am writing in response to the recent furore about the spate of under-age drinking by those who received their Junior Cert results. The debate seemed focused on the irresponsible behaviour of the teenagers and to a lesser extent their parents. As an adult who indulged in under-age drinking for a few years I am not in a position to pass judgement on others. However I am continually dismayed by the absolute lack of attention given to those who supply these children with alcohol.
If it is a criminal offence to supply alcohol to a minor, why are there so few prosecutions? Why are obviously inebriated teenagers not arrested and pressured into divulging to the Garda who sold them the alcohol? Why are there not today several public houses and off-licences closed for business while their licences are reviewed?
While adults refuse to take responsibility for their actions we cannot expect young people to do so. - Yours, etc.,
P. Bowler, Parnell Street, Dublin 1.
