UNDERSTUDY AT THE ABBEY

Sir, - Top of the agenda for my first visit to Ireland was a trip to the Abbey Theatre. I was so pleased to find that a play by one of your leading playwrights was on. Attending last Saturday's matinee performance of Translations I was disappointed to learn that due to illness, the part of Kenneth Haigh would be read by his understudy, Peader Lamb.

Whilst the part was well read, it was somewhat distracting to have one of the main characters on stage, holding loose pages with his lines brightly highlighted. Surely your national theatre could come up with a better back up against the inevitability of a simple thing such as sickness, to which we are all subjected. - Yours, etc.,
