KATHLEEN COFFEY,
Sir, - Following the tragic death of a Sister of Mercy at an unmanned crossing near Limerick in July, and as I live with the daily chore of opening and closing railway gates on leaving and entering my home, I wish to outline some facts and suggestions relating to improved safety.
Some 80 to 90 per cent of train drivers do not use their hooters. I wrote to CIE in Limerick in July about this matter and suggested the installation of automatic hooters in trains to operate at regular intervals along the line, so we, the public, need not depend on drivers to alert us of an approaching train.
Also I suggested trains should have their strong headlights on winter and summer, day and night. Even motorists are encouraged to have lights on in daytime.
I got no reply from CIE, not even an acknowledgement of my letter. - Yours, etc.,
KATHLEEN COFFEY,
Deerpark,
Carrick-on-Suir.
