Madam, - It ill becomes the ASTI president, Pat Cahill, to describe the Taoiseach as "a bit of a lad and fond of the birds and the beer" (The Irish Times, September 11th).
I am saddened that the leader of a union (of which I am proud to be a member for 35 years) should cast such cheapskate slurs on the character of a man whom most people (even his political opponents) would regard as a fundamentally decent human being.
As a practising teacher Mr Cahill should know that such inappropriate, sloppy and crude language would not even be acceptable in the classroom.
In dissociating myself from Mr Cahill's crude remarks, I am sure I speak for the overwhelming majority of my ASTI colleagues. - Yours, etc.,
