Madam, - I consider Doonesbury one of the highlights of The Irish Times. While I agree that the Duke strips can be tedious, other stories, in particular the description of the experiences of BD in the Iraq war and afterwards, are extraordinary for their accuracy, insight, humanity and humour.
I recommend the collections of these strips as reading for anyone who wants to understand the impact of trauma on both the individual and those around them, and the courage required for recovery. It is for me a classic chronicle of war and its impact, and Gary Trudeau belongs among the great anti-war writers.
Please continue to publish Doonesbury for as long as Gary Trudeau continues the extraordinary feat of writing it. - Yours, etc,
LEONIE O'DOWD, South Hill, Dartry, Dublin 6.
