Sir, - Ireland is seen, and sees itself, as a peace-loving nation. We know too well the consequences of violence, particularly in recent days when the island as a whole has expressed its condemnation and revulsion at the murderous outrage in Omagh. Surely, as a country known for its international peace-keeping role, Ireland should not be seen to lend unquestioning tacit support, through our Government's silence, to the United States' actions against Sudan. Claims that the destroyed plant was involved in producing chemical weapons have yet to be substantiated.
As matters currently stand, it is difficult to see how destroying a pharmaceutical plant producing medical supplies for a third world country may contribute to the betterment of humanity or the furtherance of world peace. - Yours, etc., Edward Brennan,
Percy Place,
Ballsbridge,
