Sir, - I share the grief of the American people at the awful terrorist attacks which took place last September. However, I find the possibility of the present war on terrorism being extended to countries such as Iraq as highly disturbing.
It is clear that in some political circles in America there is a support for extending military operations to Iraq. I believe this would be a highly unwise move, and one without legitimacy in international law. Military action against Iraq would lead to even greater instability in the Middle East.
Moreover, the UN Security Council should seek to find new ways to stop the present raft of economic sanctions against Iraq. These only have the affect of rupturing the lives of the Iraqi people and no one else.
Iraq is not a threat to third countries in the Middle East, but it must equally reassure the world in concrete terms that it is not producing weapons of mass destruction. - Yours, etc.,
