Use-by dates for the Diary

Madam, – Apropos Frank McNally’s Irishman’s Diary on sell-by/use-by dates on food (February 2nd), would it be fair to say that all such dates (excluding, of course, the edible ones) should be taken with a pinch of salt? – Yours, etc,
