Valuing the Special Olympics

Madam, – Under the Constitution all citizens are accorded equal value.

Madam, – Under the Constitution all citizens are accorded equal value.

Last week, my husband and I attended the Special Olympics Ireland Games in Limerick in which our grandson was participating and subsequently was awarded a silver medal. Almost 2,000 athletes competed in the games, yet there has been minimal coverage in the media.

It is difficult to imagine any other sporting event in Ireland with so many competitors, and so little media interest. Those of us with limited interest in sport are bombarded with excessive coverage of sporting events, and never more so than during the current World Cup.

Is it too much to expect that we should value all our citizens equally, and acknowledge the achievements of those in our society, who, in spite of many difficulties and challenges, achieve so much? To fail to do so is a sad reflection on our society and its values. – Yours, etc,
