Vanishing Hawthorn

Sir, - Kevin Myers wrote beautifully on the merits of our humble hawthorn (May 30th). He speaks of it "as being the heart and soul of the summer landscape". How true, indeed. Visitors to our country often sing its praises too. One could say it's a tourist attraction, especially when heavy and white with blossom.

How odd then, to see no evidence of it on the verges of our new motorways. On a recent drive from Dublin to Limerick I saw none in bloom. Maybe it hasn't matured yet; maybe it isn't being planted at all.

And what about other nature wildlife friendly plants, such as holly and hazel? Are they being planted? Could someone please enlighten me? - Yours, etc. Patrick Madden,
