Sir, - Rev Peter O'Callaghan states (August 10th) that "at least two [homosexuals] were saints - Anselm of Bec and Aelred of Rievaulx". This categorical attribution - if I may not say imputation - of homosexuality to Aelred can be made only by one who ignores the very considerable amount of scholarly opinion that can be quoted against it.
I should rather say categorically that Aelred was not homosexual, and that the onus of proof is on those who say he was. - Yours, etc.
